Food Truck Nerd Podcast Episode 17

My son and I had to miss a couple Saturday Moveable Feasts because we were conducting a Science Fair experiment in which we had to capture solar energy (challenging here in the dead of winter) and of course lunch time was prime time. Paulette was kind enough to go and bring some grub back for us. There’s something wonderfully meta- and ironic about street food to-go.
The weekend of January 14, 2012 we had some special house guests: two fifth-grade exchange students from Beijing. I asked them if they had street food in China and they answered yes: hot dogs and ice cream. We took them to Moveable Feast and in addition to beef and chicken skewers from An The Go and Froot Loops ice cream from Scoops, they thoroughly enjoyed the Fried Chicken platters from Soulnese. The meeting of East and West was particularly poignant that weekend because it led up to Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. The Dream is alive.- Congratulations to the winner of Mobile-cuisine.com’s 2011 Food Truck Rookie of the Year award: Staff Meal Food Truck! From…Boston. Let us know if you make it out to California any time soon.

Vote early! Vote daily (that’s the limit)!
- Speaking of Eat St., their very first San Jose episode finally aired this week on The Cooking Channel, featuring our very own The WOW Truck. It looks like the episode, “Miami Nice,” is available to watch online here, but I can’t get the video to work; YMMV. Comcast Xfinity customers with appropriate subscription packages can watch it online here. Watch out for appearances by Ronnie, Crystal, and Tim of The WOW Truck, local foodies Jenelle Murphy, Dom Hunsucker, Carolyn Jung, and Tracy Lee, and a special appearance by The WOW Girls. If you look closely you can catch me in the background (Hi, Mom!). Big shout-out to Brett Burmeister up in Portland, who for some reason didn’t get a credit in the EuroTrash segment.
- Several new trucks have hit the streets so far in 2012:
- Pollo Fritto, serving a fried chicken sandwich. Is that “po-lo” or “po-yo?” Podcaster’s dilemma.
- Grillaz Gone Wild, protégé of GrillStars. I tried their Original Philly Cheese Steak sandwich, and it was bananas.
- Kaati Fresh, offshoot of a San Jose brick & mortar. I tried the Peshawari Chicken Wrap combo.
- I finally caught up with Blast Off Truck and their space-age comfort food. The Pulled Pork sandwich with Pickled Onions was a Big Bang of flavor.
- This year I’ve also visited the following trucks for the first time:
- Bacon Bacon. Their Pork Belly sandwich is unreal, and the bacon bouquet is a thing of beauty. Paulette was so impressed she bought the tee shirt.
- Forbitten City. Their Shrimperial is garlicky perfection.
- Truck_food is a new Twitter account aggregating Bay Area food trucks.
- The San Jose Taco Festival of Innovation is starting to sizzle. Follow them on Facebook and Twitter for all the latest info.
- Recordings
- A short snippet of Paulette and me ordering from Sanguchon on 10/22/2011. Indulge me; this recording cracks me up because I misheard the server’s translation of their name which is completely understandable if you look at their logo.
- Several warm and friendly chats from a cold and drizzly food truck gathering at the San Jose Flea Market on 11/11/2011.
